11th ANNUAL NEW ENGLAND CONSERVATORY
SUMMER
METROPOLITAN FLUTE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA
Paige Dashner Long, Director
Thursday, July 19- Sunday, July 22, 2011
New England Conservatory of Music Boston, MA
The New England Conservatory Summer Metropolitan Flute Festival Orchestra is a unique ensemble opportunity for students and teachers at the intermediate and advanced levels. The weekend combines large ensemble and smaller select advanced ensemble rehearsals, concluding with a final concert at New England Conservatory’s historic Jordan Hall on Sunday, July 22. Teachers are invited to participate with students in the large flute ensemble and will be featured in the advanced select ensemble. We welcome their studio participation. University flutists will also be featured for one selection during the concert.
Director Paige Dashner Long will bring her unique flute collection, including her Kingma Sub Contrabass Flute in G-one of three in the world- and her Kotato Double Contrabass Flute in C- one of four in the world.
Each year the final concert features a premiere of a new flute orchestra work. The 2011 premiere piece was Eventide Soliloquy composed by director Paige Dashner Long, in loving memory of her son Sean Callan MacDonald who died unexpectedly August 2010. Eventide Soliloquy is an original composition that features each instrument of the flute family in a soliloquy. The piece has many different moods and showcases the beautiful colors of a flute orchestra as well as each different type of flute, in a variety of musical styles.
The New England Conservatory Summer Metropolitan Flute Festival Orchestra is a wonderful blend of approximately one third students, one third highly trained community adults, and one third professional flutists and flute teachers. Drawing flutists from all over the world, previous festivals have been comprised of flutists from throughout the United States, as well as Japan, France, Venezuela and Israel.
